NEW YORK STATE COACHING LICENSE FOR NON-CERTIFIED TEACHER COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS
All non-certified teacher coaches must apply for a coaching license.  All non-classroom teacher coaches need to apply for a coaching license (nurses, teaching assistants, parents, communty members, non-paid volunteers).

NYS certified teachers do NOT have to apply for a coaching license.  This includes pupil personnel staff (school counselors, social workers, administrators)

Applications are submitted electronically through "TEACH Online Services," at the Office of Teaching Initiatives website:

Initial License
Temporary Coaching License Requirements:  May only be appointed if there are no certified teachers available with experience and qualifications to coach the sport. (valid for one year)
 
There is a separate fee and application required for each sport coached.
 
Requirements:
 
  1. Valid First Aid  (please see:  http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/pe/toolkit.html for a list of acceptable courses).  The provider and course name must match exactly to the approved list.  **This must be a full first aid course, not a refresher.**
  2. Valid CPR Certification (please see:  http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/pe/toolkit.html for a list of acceptable courses)  The provider and course name must match exactly to the approved list.  **This must be a full CPR course, not a refresher.**
  3. Workshop – Child Abuse – www.nysmandatedreporter.org – print out a certificate of completion (free)
  4. Workshop – Violence Intervention and Prevention – www.gstboces.org/save – print out a certificate of completion ($24)
  5. Effective 12/31/13, Dignity for All Students Act Workshop – free through Section III Athletics
  6. Fingerprint Clearance
  7. School District Recommendation – This is a Superintendent’s statement that is entered in TEACH by the school district verifying that you have been hired by their district to coach this sport.
Concussion training is not a requirement for a license, but is required to be a coach.  This must be taken every two years.  Proof of this training must be retained by the school district.
Temporary
License Renewals
1st Temporary Renewal RequirementsValid for one year.

*NFHS Accredited Interscholastic Coach Certificate (AIC – Level I) includes:

For the Temporary License or Temporary License Renewal, you must have a commitment from the School District for employment.  The District will enter a Superintendent's Statement into TEACH.  Your application will not be complete without the receipt of this electronic signature.
 
Professional Coaching License: Professional Coaching License:  (issued to an individual)  A holder of a professional coaching license is considered on equal footing with certified teachers for coaching positions. 
 
Option 1 (current requirements) Must be followed if the coach was issued the third temporary using this option. Option II – NFHS    Must be followed if the coach was issued the third temporary using this option.

**NFHS Certified Interscholastic Coach Certificate (CIC – Level 2) includes:
  • Fundamentals of coaching (NYS specific) (included in AIC)

  • Creating a safe and respectful environment
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Teaching and modeling behavior
  • Engaging effectively with parents
  • Sportsmanship
  • Sports nutrition
  • Heat illness prevention
 ***Internship – 30 hour minimum.  Includes internship evaluation form completed and retained at the local level.  Coaching internship attestation form (sent to SED).
 
Note:  If using Option II – NFHS certification for additional specific sport certificates, the evaluator must submit directly to the Office of Teaching Initiatives, the coaching internship attestation form for the sport and the NFHS sport-specific course completed.

Professional License Rewals Professional Coaching License Renewals (valid for three years)

  •  All requirements as listed above under professional coaching license 
  • Three years of satisfactory evaluations in the sport under a valid coaching license

Additional information:
  • Extensions – applicants with extenuating circumstances may apply to SED for an extension of time to complete the coaching courses.
  • Equivalent experience – applicants who have taken coaching courses similar to the NYS required coursework may request a review of transcripts and course descriptions from SED for equivalent experience.
TEACH Application Process
  1. First time users click on "Self-Register with TEACH," if you have already created a TEACH acocunt, click on "Login to TEACH."
  2. Once login is complete, click on "Apply for Certificate."
  3. Select your Area of Interest: Other School Service
  4. Select a Subject Area: Coaching
  5. Select a Grade Level: Adolescent - Grades 7-12
  6. Select a Title: Select the sport you will be coaching
  7. Select the Type of Certificate:  Select the type from the dropdown  If you need to apply for more than one sport, select additional certificates.
  8. Your application must be reviewed by BOCES.  Select: I want my application to be reviewed by the BOCES Regional Certification Office. Choose your local BOCES (Oswego County).  If you do not find the BOCES by selecting the School District option, choose by selecting County.
  9. Check your TEACH account to determine the status of your application.
