APW Juniors Attend "Mad City Money" Simulation Event

Empower Federal Credit Union recently visited APW JSHS to host “Mad City Money” for our 11th grade class.
This hands-on simulation event gave students a real-world look at budgeting — with each student managing a unique job, salary, family and financial situation assigned to them. Upon reviewing their assignments, students visited various tables throughout the gym to learn about different financial decisions they have to make. These decisions included healthcare, renting/buying a home, transportation, children, pets, credit cards, cell phone plans, credit unions vs banks and navigating the unexpected. Students learned how to budget for life, taking into account their unique situations and financial commitments.
“This is a great opportunity to get these kids thinking about budgeting and their futures,” said Amy DeJohn, APW JSHS Business Teacher & FBLA Advisor. The Junior Class students walked away from this event with a much better understanding of budgeting, financial decisions that lay ahead and how and where they will invest their money.
“Mad City Money” is a simulation event offered by credit unions like Empower to help teach young people about budgeting. For more information about this simulation event, please visit About Mad City Money.
